An introduction to Stream Ecology and Biodiversity

Politecnico di Torino - Laib3B, ore 14.30-17.30

On January 9th 2023, in the framework of the course "River engineering and restoration" (Prof. Carlo Camporeale, Master's Degree programme in Civil Engineering - Water Engineering track), an open seminar on "An introduction to Stream Ecology and Biodiversity" will be given by Prof. Stefano Fenoglio, Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology of the University of Torino.

The seminar will take place from 2.30 to 5.30 pm in LAIB 3B (click here for directions)

Seminar abstract
Streams are unique ecosystems, extremely dynamic and characterized by enormous environmental and biological diversity. Running water environments have a dual energy input, and profound and multiple interactions with terrestrial environments. Furthermore, streams are home to an impressive biodiversity: they cover less than 2 % of the Earth's surface, but they host at least 9 % of the Earth's described animal species. How does a river work from an ecological point of view? What are the adaptations that organisms have evolved to colonize flowing waters? How can be explained the enormous biodiversity of these environments? In this lesson these and other topics will be discussed, also presenting the results of some studies carried out in this context.

Speaker's profile
Stefano Fenoglio is full professor of Zoology at the DBIOS, University of Turin. His research interests concern stream biodiversity and ecology, aquatic fauna and environmental monitoring. He is one of the founders of the Center for the Study of Alpine Rivers - ALPSTREAM, a structure born from the collaboration between Monviso Park, the University of Turin, the Polytechnic of Turin and the University of Eastern Piedmont.
