GEOMECHANICAL EFFECTS OF THE USE OF SUBSURFACE RESOURCES-TOWARDS A BETTER UNDESTANDING

Sala Riunioni 1° Piano DIATI ingresso 3, Politecnico di Torino - Corso Duca degli Abruzzi 24, Torino

Seminario con il Dr. Peter Fokker (TNO, Utrecht)

BIOGRAPHY
Peter Fokker studied physics at Utrecht University. After his PhD he joined Shell, and later TNO, the Dutch institute for applied scientific research. His main research interest concerns reservoirgeomechanics and coupled modelling, where he studies phenomena like subsidence and induced seismicity. Peter is connected to the Politecnico di Torino as visiting professor in petroleum engineering and to the Utrecht University as guest researcher in rock mechanics.
ABSTRACT
The focus of the presentation will be toward subsidence and induced seismicity. Subsidence is a cause of damage, but monitoring can also be used to obtain knowledge about the reservoir and its surroundings that is complementary to reservoir engineering knowledge. This will be elucidated with an inversion result obtained in a field study. Induced seismicity is also a cause of damage, but the mechanism is less well quantified. The presentation will demonstrate how a physics approach can help building understanding and improve forecasting capabilities.
