MesoHABSIM methodology training course (MESOHABITAT SIMULATION MODEL) – 2023

Training course to model and evaluate fluvial and torrential habitats

September 18th – 22nd 2023

Training course location:

Verve Torre Marina, Viale Lungomare di Ponente, 22, 54100 Massa

The Mesohabitat Simultaion Model (MesoHABSIM) methodology training course 2023 is organized by the following institutions: the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, the Department of Environment, Land and Infrastructure Engineering of Politecnico di Torino, the Georesources and Environment Association, in partnership with the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering of University of Trento (especially the Group of Environmental Hydraulics and Morphodynamics), the Provincial Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Chemestry, Life Sciences and Environmental Sustainability of University of Parma, Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology of University of Turin (especially the Centre for the study of Alpine rivers – ALPSTREAM and the Sustainable Development and Cooperation PhD program), University of Lyons (in particular CNRS-EVS / ENS-Lyon / EUR H2O'Lyon), the Italian Hydrotechnical Association, the Eastern Alps District Basin Authority, the Po River District Basin Authority and the Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Tuscany.

The MesoHABSIM methodology focuses on the study of habitat’s availability for the fauna in torrential and fluvial environments. Following a significant implementation in Northern Italy this methodology has been proven suitable for:

  • The evaluation of the fluvial habitat integrity index (IH)
  • The evaluation of the environmental flow
  • The estimate of the ecological flow
  • The estimate of the habitat’s availability in temporary water streams
  • The impact evaluation and monitoring of dam clearing operations and intake structures
  • Planning and monitoring fluvial redevelopment projects
  • The fish vocation of the water stream
  • The preservation of specific aquatic species

Aims

The course’s general aim is to describe the MesoHABSIM methodology and for participants to acquire field data collection knowledge and to carry out evaluation analysis and model of fluvial habitats. The training course will also provide the skills to use two softwares (MapStream and SimStream) developed for methodology application.

The methodological approach refers to what is reported in ISPRA MLG Handbook 154/2017.

Recipients

The training course is open to freelancers, public institutions and private companies’ employees who have at least a basic knowledge of fluvial ecosystem, geomorphology, topography and GIS application.
