Recovery of Materials from RAEE/R1-R2

The project was born from the collaboration between DIATI of the Politecnico di Torino and AMIAT (Azienda Multiservizi Igiene Ambientale Torino) SpA, part of the IREN Group, which manages the Durable Goods Treatment (TBD) plant, dedicated to the treatment of the electrical equipment and electronic waste (RAEE). The project partnership also includes DIMEAS of the Politecnico di Torino, IREN Ambiente SpA, Chiaro Macchine Speciali Srl and APIRAEE consortium. The main objective of the project is the development of highly repeatable and rapidly transferable technologies to the industrial world, aimed at optimizing the management of critical aspects of state-of-the-art WEEE treatment technologies. In particular, the project goals are:
• recovery of polyurethane from refrigerators (RAEE R1) as secondary raw material
• optimization of the separation of cement from the washing machine carcass (RAEE R2).
The expected results are: a descriptive, representative and unique description of the polyurethane waste coming from the treatment of RAEE WEEE (CER 19 12 04); a standard product presentation, marketable as secondary raw material, for each of the recovery opportunities under consideration; the project, in all its phases, of a full scale process line dedicated to the refining of the polyurethane generated by the R1 line of the TBD plant; a prototype machine for cutting the carcasses of washing machines aimed at extracting the counterweight in cement.
