Performance-Engineered Mix Design of Asphalt Mixture

DIATI Meeting Room - Door 3, 1st floor

ABSTRACT - This seminar presents the asphalt mixture performance-engineered mix design (PEMD) method that is being developed under the sponsorship of the United States Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). First, test methods, analytical models, and software programs that form the framework of the PEMD will be presented. Cracking Index parameter, Sapp, and rutting index parameter, ATR, will be introduced. Two levels of PEMD will be presented: index-based and predictive PEMD. The components of the PEMD serve as the means of developing performance-related specifications and provide a foundation to integrate mix design, structural design, and construction quality assurance specifications.

BIO - Dr. Y. Richard Kim received his Bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University, Korea, and Master’s and PhD degrees from Texas A&M University, USA. He has over thirty years of experience in both the laboratory and field aspects of the performance evaluation of asphalt materials and pavements. Dr. Kim has published over 300 papers in national and international technical journals and proceedings. He is the editor of the ASCE book entitled Modeling of Asphalt Concrete and the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering and International Journal of Highway Engineering. He has spoken at numerous national and international settings, including over 100 invited/keynote speeches.
Professor Kim has won numerous awards, including the Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Achievement Award (1998), the Walter J. Emmons Best Paper Awards by the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (1997, 2006, and 2009), NCSU Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award (2014, 2016), the Alcoa Foundation Distinguished Engineering Research Award (2015), the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Award (2018), and Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Extension (2019). In 2016, Professor Kim became one of the eleven inaugural members of the Research Leadership Academy at NC State University. The Research Leadership Academy is the faculty-driven epicenter of research leadership and faculty mentoring enhancing NCSU’s research culture and is composed of the University’s most outstanding researchers and mentors from diverse fields.
