Environmental, social, and travel behavior impacts of innovative and emerging technologies in the transport sector
Abstract
Demographic shifts, improvements in computing power and mapping technology, the use of cloud computing and big data, changes in wireless communication, concerns about congestion, and increasing awareness about the environment and climate change are changing transportation in cities. Across the globe, cities are becoming “smarter”, leveraging information and communications technologies (ICT) to more intelligently and efficiently use resources to achieve cost and energy savings; and improve service delivery and quality of life to make cities more sustainable and livable. These technological innovations, coupled with others, have quickly given rise to shared and automated mobility strategies.
Adam Cohen will speak about the latest developments in innovative mobility from around the world. Key focus areas will include developments in shared mobility, micromobility, advanced air mobility, and shared automated vehicles. Adam will talk about the micro, meso, and macro trends contributing to the growth of these mobility services; explain the role of public-private partnerships; and discuss opportunities and challenges to mainstreaming. Adam can also discuss the growing body of demographic and impact literature, as well as gaps in understanding requiring additional research study. Finally, Adam can discuss similarities and differences in global approaches to mobility innovation, including integrated mobility services such as mobility as a service (MaaS), mobility on demand (MOD), and super apps.
Biography
Adam Cohen is a nationally and internationally recognized research expert in innovative and emerging transportation technologies, has completed more than 50 research projects on mobility on demand, mobility as a service, shared mobility, shared micromobility, and shared automated vehicles. He has over 18 years of experience as a researcher with the Transportation Sustainability Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley, and 15 years of experience as a researcher with the Mineta Transportation Institute of San Jose State University. Adam co-chairs TRB's standing subcommittee on the Equity of Innovative Mobility Services and Technologies AP020(3). He currently serves as Vice Chairman of SAE International's Shared and Digital Mobility Committee and is the cosponsor of SAE JA3163 which establishes standard terms and definitions for shared mobility, mobility on demand, and mobility as a service.
Adam Cohen is serving on the independent evaluation teams of three Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and two California Air Resources Board (CARB) programs. As part of this role, Adam is evaluating approximately 75 demonstrations on innovative mobility strategies. Adam has also co-authored more than a dozen guidebooks on shared mobility, mobility on demand, and automated vehicles for the U.S. Department Transportation (USDOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), American Planning Association (APA), and NCHRP. Collectively, this research is influencing policy making at the state and regional levels.
