“Global and Regional Water and Food Security Challenges”
Seminar with prof. Noam Weisbrod, Direttore del Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
Abstract
Water has become one of the most valuable resources for the world population. Our water resources are continuously deteriorating, both in terms of quantity and quality. In parallel, population growth, climate instability, improvement of life-style and desertification, among other reasons, resulted in water scarcity increase in many regions around the world.
Water is also a key for food security; therefore, water shortage is a major concern for our global future needs. A brief overview of the current water scarcity will be given together with some specific examples. As the Middle East is the most water scarce region in the world, some examples and complexities related to this region will be briefly presented as well. Ideas and potential solutions for better management of our water resources will be discussed, mostly with examples from Israel. Last, the importance of the academia for finding better solutions and technologies will be discussed.
Short Bio
Prof. Noam Weisbrod is director of the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. Prof. Weisbrod’s own primary research direction is related to hydrological problems in aquifers and unsaturated systems, emphasizing on colloidal transport, fracture flow, aquifer recharge, evaporation, salinization and gas transport at the earth-atmosphere interface. He was a member of several delegations focused on water problems in developing countries, including the Israeli delegation at the UNCCD convention in Namibia.
Prof. Weisbrod is hosted at Politecnico as a member of the FULL Interdepartmental Laboratory Advisory Committee, whose Advisory Board is a part.
