    Abstract

    AquiRem è un metodo innovativo per la bonifica di acquiferi contaminati tramite sintesi diretta nel sottosuolo di particelle micro- e nanoscopiche (NPs) a base di metalli zerovalenti. AquiRem consente di superare alcune limitazioni legate all’uso di nanoparticelle per la bonifica di acquiferi contaminati (processo noto come nanoremediation), principalmente riconducibili all’elevato costo dei nanomateriali commerciali impiegati e alla difficoltà tecnica riscontrata nell’iniettare i nanoreagenti nel sottosuolo (il terreno si comporta come un filtro impedendo, pertanto, la migrazione delle particelle ad una distanza sufficiente dal punto di iniezione).

  • GRETA: Near-surface-geothermal Resources in Territory of the Alpine Space, (2016-2019) - Responsabile Scientifico

    Abstract

    The Alpine region must tackle rising energy consumption and, accordingly, CO2 emissions reduction, related mostly to heatingneeds (mainly from residential and tourism sectors). The potential of renewable energy sources to handle this energyrequirement has been discussed in some recent studies. However, the opportunity to utilize Near-Surface Geothermal Energy(NSGE) has not yet been properly highlighted. Moreover, differences in country-specific regulations and practices currentlyimpede a successful increase of use of this technology.The aim of the GRETA project is to demonstrate the potential of NSGE in the Alpine Space and to foster its integration into futureenergy plans at different administrative levels. For this purpose, transnational-congruent criteria will be defined for the efficientimplementation and operation of NSGE systems. The same criteria will also be implemented to develop a spatial explicitassessment of the potential (technical, economic, environmental, social) of these systems in the Alpine region. Thecountry-specific regulations and practices will be reviewed and the best-practice specifications will be summarized intoguidelines through close interaction and continuous feedback with relevant stakeholders. The outputs of the project will serve topromote and guide the implementation of shallow geothermal energy into policy instruments, e.g., the energy plans ofmunicipalities or planning bureaus.

    Abstract

    Biological tissues are constituted by cells and intercellular components. Hydrated tissues host an interstitial fluid that conveys nutrients to the cells and removes the products of the cellular metabolism, thereby establishing the mass transfer necessary for the cellular activities. The fluid comprises also ionic species that interact chemically, electrically and mechanically with the cells and the other intercellular constituents. Moreover, a tissue responds to environmental stimuli by varying its mass and shape, and reorganising its internal structure. Such reorganisation, known as remodelling or structural adaptation, manifests itself in different ways (e.g., reorientation of collagen fibres in cartilage, healing of wounds, and change of the adhesion properties of cellular aggregates), influences the processes occurring among the cells and intercellular constituents, and triggers the evolution of the macroscopic properties (e.g., permeability and elasticity) by which tissues are often characterised. The history of a tissue, thus, comprehends interactions occurring at different levels of resolution, each level being characterised by its time and length scales. This is also true for tumours, in which the macroscopic behaviour of cells is dictated by subcellular processes. The scope of this proposal is to develop mathematical models and computational strategies capable of: quantifying, for a given set of applied stimuli, to which extent the cellular and intercellular processes, that are necessary for growth and remodelling, are modulated by growth and remodelling themselves, and vice versa; solving the inverse problem, i.e., managing the stimuli necessary for determining such loop of interactions. To reach these goals, it is necessary to elaborate discrete models of cellular dynamics, continuum models of growth and remodelling, and reactive flow models in heterogeneous and anisotropic structures, and couple those reciprocally through level-transfer algorithms.

    Abstract

    The main objective of the presented innovation action is the first application and near-market replication of a novel water nanogeotechnology for the immobilization of toxic metals in groundwater aquifers, drinking water wells, and river bank filtration sites. The basic concept of our technology is the creation of an adsorptive in situ barrier for the immobilization of toxic metal contaminations. This barrier is made of iron oxide nanoparticles, which are injected into sediments as colloidal suspension, forming stable deposits there. Over the last 6 years, we have developed a novel technology for the injection of iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) into groundwater contaminant plumes. The feasibility of this approach has been successfully tested in lab experiments and a scientific field application. Specifically, our approach addresses arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, and zinc, all of which are known major groundwater contaminants. Now, we want to bring this novel, green and near-market water eco-innovation into the European markets, and beyond. The very core of this effort is the performance of two industrial-scale applications of our technology at two different types of contaminated sites. This first application of our technological approach under field conditions is the major objective of REGROUND. By developing our technology into a market-ready application, REGROUND will globally transform the efforts to mitigate the risks posed by toxic metal contaminations to humans and ecosystems. The REGROUND technology, due to its low costs and wide applicability, will be made highly available. The near-market replication of our technology and subsequent commercialization efforts are an integral part of REGROUND. This will enable immobilization of toxic metal contaminations at sites which were left untreated so far due to technical or economic reasons.
