Biography

Alberto Viglione is an Associate Professor at the Politecnico of Turin since 2019. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2002 from the Politecnico of Turin in Environmental Engineering with a thesis on "Turbulence structures in the canopy layer''. In the years 2003-2004, he received a scholarship on the theme "Physical and hydrological characterisation of river catchments in Piedmont'', financed by Regione Piemonte (Italy). In the period 2004-2007, he carried out his Ph.D. on the theme "Non-supervised statistical methods for the prediction of hydrological variables in ungauged sites'' at the Hydraulic Department of the Politecnico of Turin. In 2009 he received the AMGA price for the best Ph.D. thesis on water resources. In the years 2007-2018, he worked as Research Fellow at the Vienna University of Technology in the field of "Flood Hydrology". In 2018 he received the habilitation in Austria as a teacher in the field of "Hydrology" with a thesis entitled "Understanding and Estimating River Flood Hazards across Timescales: from Flood Events to Long-Term Dynamics".

Research topics

  • Characterization of hydro-meteorological extremes - The program deals with issues related to the observation, analysis and modelling of hydrological and meteorological extreme events. The program includes: the statistical analysis of extreme precipitation and discharge events or other variables related to the hydrological cycle; the analysis of the climatic processes that determine the hydro-meteorological extremes; hydrological modeling at basin and regional scales; the study of the impacts on hydro-meteorological extremes of climate variability, the change in land use and the regulation of watercourses; the study of hydrological/hydraulic risk dynamics at event and climatic scales; the development of methodologies for the integration of data from different sources for the space-time characterization of extreme hydro-meteorological events.

Research objectives:
- to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of climatic, hydrologic and human processes in river basins;
- to decipher the implications of these dynamics on the probabilities of extreme hydrological events (in particular river floods) and their evolution in space and time.

Research strategy (combination of):
- investigation of long time series of observed/reconstructed climatic, hydrologic and human related variables;
- comparative analysis of climatic, hydrologic and human related variables across spatial gradients;
- conceptual modelling of the interconnection of climatic, hydrologic and human processes as a mean to understand what the data say.
